Mission

 

In pursuit of excellence, the Colorado High School Activities Association strives to create a positive and equitable environment in which all qualified student participants are challenged and inspired to meet their highest potential. 

 

To fulfill this mission the Colorado High School Activities Association will:

  • Act as an integral component of the educational process.

  • Administrate, interpret, and seek compliance with the CHSAA By-laws as need to promote fair play with in Colorado activities and athletics.  Provide diverse and equitable opportunities for participation that encourages all qualified students to take part in the activity/athletic experience.

  • Provide an environment that enhances personal development through sporting behavior, character education, teamwork, leadership and citizenship while increasing values that partner the educational standards of the State of Colorado.

  • Recognize the outstanding accomplishments of Colorado athletes, teams, coaches and administers through our academic and activity rewards programs.

Ernie Derrera Assistant Commissioner 

 

Derrera is one of six Assistant Commissioner for the CHSAA Organization.  Derrera oversees Band Activities, Soccer, and Wrestling  for the State of Colorado.  However, Derrera prior to his acceptance was the athletic director at Frederick High School.  In addition to being an AD he was a teacher and cross country coach at Thompson Valley (2000-05; 2009-15), and a teacher and wrestling coach at Roosevelt (2005-09). He recently retired as Master Chief Petty Officer in the United States Navy, a role he held since 1987.

                               Organizational Structure

 

In may of 1921, a group of superintendents and principals who wanted to better regulate and develop the interscholastic school athletic programs in Colorado met and organized the Colorado High School Athletic Conference.  

In 1924 the Colorado High School Athletic Conference joined the National Federation of State High School Associations.

 

In 1943 the Colorado High School Athletic Conference changed to the Colorado High School Activities Association and interscholastic activities would come under it administration and supervision and so CHSAA was formed.
